BMJ Case Rep Published online: [please include Day Month Year] doi:10.1136/ bcr-2015-213214 DESCRIPTION An elderly man with chronic renal insufficiency presented with recurrent lower gastrointestinal bleeding. He had been admitted with similar symptoms 6 months earlier, and a colonoscopy had revealed a bleeding vascular ectasia, which was clipped successfully. On this admission, he was initially evaluated with a capsule endoscopy and a colonoscopy. The colonoscopy revealed old clotted blood, diverticulosis, internal haemorrhoids and a small sigmoid polyp (not biopsied). No active bleeding was seen. A 99mTc labelled red blood cell scan was subsequently performed, given its ability to better detect lower bleeding rates (0.1 mL/min)

Technological value of SPECT/CT fusion imaging for the diagnosis of lower gastrointestinal bleeding.
The aim of this study was to assess the clinical value of diagnosing and locating lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/computed tomography (CT) fusion imaging with 99mTc labeled red blood cells ((99m)Tc-RBC). Fifty-six patients with suspected lower GI bleeding received a preoperative intravenous injection of (99m)Tc-RBC and each underwent...
متن کاملHybrid SPECT-CT with 99mTc-labeled red blood cell in a case of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome: added value over planar scintigraphy.
Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare clinical entity characterized by multiple venous malformations (hemangiomas) of the skin and gastrointestinal tract. These hemangiomas usually cause episodes of occult gastrointestinal bleeding leading to iron deficiency anemia, and also carry a significant potential for serious hemorrhage. The 99mechnetium (99mTc)-labeled red blood cell scintig...
متن کاملImportance of Heparin Provocation and SPECT/CT in Detecting Obscure Gastrointestinal Bleeding on 99mTc-RBC Scintigraphy
We presented a pediatric case with a history of intermittent melena for 3 years because of angiodyplasia of small intestine. The results of frequent upper gastrointestinal endoscopies and colonoscopies as well as both Tc-red blood cell (RBC) and Meckel's scintigraphies for several times were negative in detection of bleeding site. However, Tc-RBC scintigraphy with single-photon emission compute...
متن کامل99mTc-red blood cells SPECT and planar scintigraphy in the diagnosis of hepatic hemangiomas.
The aim of the study is the assessment of the value of SPECT (single photon emission computerized tomography) using 99mTc-labeled red blood cells in the detection of liver hemangioma, in comparison to planar imaging. With planar red blood cell scintigraphy, sensitivity of the method was 76%, specificity 98%, positive predictive value 98% and negative predictive value 79%. With SPECT, sensitivit...
متن کاملMonte Carlo Study of the Effect of Backscatter Materail Thickness on 99mTc Source Response in Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography
Introduction SPECT projections are contaminated by scatter radiation, resulting in reduced image contrast and quantitative errors. Backscatter constitutes a major part of the scatter contamination in lower energy windows. The current study is an evaluation of the effect of backscatter material on FWHM and image quality investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. Materials and Methods SIMIND program...
